How the spelling bee works

This spelling bee reads a word aloud and asks you to spell it. Pick a difficulty, press Hear the word, then type what you hear. It tracks your correct, wrong, and streak counts so you can practice the way a real spelling bee runs.

How to get better at spelling

Strong spellers don't memorize words letter by letter — they listen for chunks. Break a spoken word into syllables and spell one beat at a time (in·for·ma·tion), and a long, intimidating word becomes four short, manageable ones. Saying the word slowly to yourself before you type often surfaces a syllable you'd otherwise rush past.

It also helps to learn the building blocks words share. Recognizing roots, prefixes, and suffixes — -tion, -sion, -ous, -able, -ment, pre-, anti- — means you can spell a whole family of words once you know one. Keep an eye on English's reliable trouble spots: silent letters (knee, doubt, island), double consonants (accommodate, embarrass), and the classic i-before-e pattern with its well-known exceptions.

For steady improvement, practice a little and often rather than cramming, and lean on the controls here: slow the Voice rate down when a word is tricky, use Repeat to hear it again, and only Reveal after you've made a genuine attempt — getting it wrong and then seeing the answer is one of the most effective ways to make a spelling stick. Start on Easy for short 4–5 letter words and let the Auto difficulty stretch you as your streak grows.

Frequently asked questions

How does the spelling bee work?

Choose a difficulty level, press Hear the word to have it spoken aloud, then type your spelling and submit. You can repeat the word, skip it, or reveal the answer, and your streak grows with each correct spelling.

Why can't I hear the word?

The game uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis. If you hear nothing, try Chrome or Edge, check your volume, and make sure your browser allows audio.

Can I change how fast the word is spoken?

Yes. Use the Voice rate setting to slow the word down or speed it up.

Is this good spelling bee practice for kids?

Yes. The easy level uses shorter 4–5 letter words and you can slow the voice down, which makes it a friendly practice tool for students preparing for a classroom or school spelling bee.
